Teams & Drivers 2026
Past Races

NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) was founded on February 21, 1948, by Bill France Sr. in Daytona Beach, Florida, after he gathered race drivers and promoters to a meeting at the Streamline Hotel there in December 1947 to establish a unified rulebook for the chaotic, regionally fragmented stock car racing sport. The first race of the most prestigious division still running today, the “Strictly Stock” Series (predecessor of today’s Cup Series), took place on June 19, 1949, at the Charlotte Speedway and was won by Jim Roper, after the original winner Glenn Dunaway was disqualified for illegal rear spring reinforcement.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Richard Petty, nicknamed “The King,” set standards that remain unmatched to this day: with 200 wins, he is the sole record holder in Cup Series history, and in 1967 he won a still-standing record of 27 races in a single season, including ten consecutive wins. His seven championships between 1964 and 1979 held the solo record for many years.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, Dale Earnhardt matched Petty’s seven titles with championships between 1980 and 1994. Earnhardt’s fatal crash during the Daytona 500 in 2001, in the final turn of the final lap, marked the deepest turning point in the series’ history and accelerated a safety revolution that continues to this day: from the mandatory HANS neck restraint to universally installed SAFER barriers on track walls to the “Car of Tomorrow” introduced in 2007 with reinforced cockpits.

In the 2000s, Jimmie Johnson took the lead and won five consecutive championships between 2006 and 2010, a feat unmatched by any other driver and a record that stands today. With two additional titles in 2013 and 2016, he joined Petty and Earnhardt with seven championships. In 2022, the “Next Gen” race car, the most radical technical overhaul in series history featuring independent suspension and larger tires, replaced the previous chassis concept.

Kyle Larson of Hendrick Motorsports secured his second championship in 2025 after 2021 and enters the 2026 season, the 78th season of the NASCAR Cup Series, as the defending champion.
