Talladega Superspeedway was constructed in 1969 on approximately 2000 hectares of land near the city of Talladega in the U.S. state of Alabama and opened that same year. However, the inaugural race in the fall of 1969 turned out to be one of the most turbulent races in NASCAR history, as a tire war between manufacturers and the founding of a new drivers’ union led to considerable tensions between drivers and track operators, resulting in numerous veteran drivers boycotting the event.

Until 1989, the facility in Lincoln, Alabama, bore the name Alabama International Motor Speedway before being renamed Talladega Superspeedway, a name that to this day stands for one of the most impressive and simultaneously feared tracks on the NASCAR calendar. Over the decades, the facility has established itself as a major stage for the Cup Series, where some of the most spectacular and at the same time riskiest races of the season are regularly held.

The Tri-Oval measures 4.281 kilometers and is thus considered one of the longest oval tracks on the entire NASCAR calendar. With only four turns but extremely steep banking, the track layout allows consistently high speeds over long sections. The width of the racing surface additionally creates room for multiple racing lines, which produces classic pack racing in the slipstream, a trademark of Talladega that makes the races one of the most unpredictable experiences of the season.

Parker Kligerman holds the official track record, turning the fastest lap ever recorded in 2019 with a time of 0:46.530, underscoring the enormous speed potential of the Talladega oval. At the most recent running of the Jack Link’s 500, Chase Briscoe prevailed, emerging as the winner in 2025 and thus adding his name to the long list of significant Talladega victories. Such wins are traditionally considered particularly valuable because the race action, through drafting effects and tight car fields, remains open until the final turn and surprising turns of events are not uncommon.
