The History of DTM

DTM was founded in 1984 as the Deutsche Produktionswagen-Meisterschaft (German Production Car Championship), emerging from the financially derailed Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterschaft, which had by then turned to costly Group C sports prototypes. The first round was held in March 1984 at the Belgian Circuit Zolder; after 15 races, Volker Strycek became the series’ first champion in a BMW 635 CSi, despite not winning a single race. In 1986 the series adopted the name still used today: Deutsche Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft (DTM).

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the DTM became a stage for factory teams from Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Opel and Alfa Romeo, fielding increasingly elaborate touring car prototypes. This era reached its technical peak in 1993 with Nicola Larini’s Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI, whose carbon-fibre bodywork and Formula 1-derived electronics left the competition trailing.

Escalating costs eventually pushed the series toward internationalisation: in 1995, the DTM ran alongside the newly created International Touring Car Championship (ITC); by 1996 the national DTM had disappeared entirely, and by the end of that year the ITC too collapsed under exploding budgets. Only in 2000 did the series return as the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, led by Gerhard Berger and the ITR. Bernd Schneider became the defining figure of the new DTM, earning the nickname “Mr. DTM” and remaining the series’ record champion to this day with five titles (1995, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006).

Between 2000 and 2018, Mercedes, Audi and BMW competed with naturally aspirated V8 touring cars, before the series attempted to revive full factory involvement in 2019 with high-performance turbocharged four-cylinder engines under the international “Class 1” ruleset, aligned with Japan’s Super GT. The project lasted only two seasons: Mercedes had already withdrawn at the end of 2018, and Audi’s exit at the end of 2020 left the DTM without any factory teams.

Since 2021, the DTM has run GT3 cars from numerous manufacturers, fielded by customer teams rather than factories. Maximilian Götz became the first GT3-era champion, followed by drivers including Thomas Preining and Mirko Bortolotti, before Ayhancan Güven, driving a Porsche, became the first Turkish champion in 2025. Mercedes-AMG won that same season’s manufacturers’ title, its 16th in the series’ history, a new record.
