Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona, opened in 1964 with the ambition to become the western home of open-wheel racing. Designed by Scottsdale-based amateur sports car driver Richard Hogue in the foothills of the Estrella Mountains, the facility hosted sports car and USAC races from its very first year. This early focus on open-wheel racing defined the character of the track long before NASCAR ever became involved.

NASCAR didn’t arrive in Phoenix until 1978, when Richard Petty scored the first of his three victories there in the Winston West Series. However, it would take another decade until 1988 for the track to host its first Cup Series race. Today, Phoenix Raceway is owned by NASCAR itself and is led by track president Latasha Causey, an arrangement that has enabled steady expansion and modernization of the facility over the decades.

In terms of layout, Phoenix is considered a true oddity on the NASCAR calendar. The nearly 1.644-kilometer course with its four turns is designed as a dogleg tri-oval with flat banking and, because of its unusual track configuration with its distinctive kink, affectionately known as the ‘Desert Oddball.’ The unique location in the midst of desert landscape at the foot of the Estrella Mountains further emphasizes this special character and makes the track one of the most idiosyncratic ovals in the series.

With a spectator capacity of around 42,000 seats as of 2019, Phoenix may not rank among the largest but counts among the most atmospheric venues on the Cup Series calendar. Strategy, driving skill, and the notorious late-stage intensity traditionally decide victory and defeat here. Most recently, Ryan Blaney prevailed in 2025, adding his name to a long list of prominent winners who have already triumphed on the idiosyncratic desert course.

For 2026, all eyes turn once again to this unmistakable course in the Arizona desert. The dogleg-characterized layout traditionally produces exciting position battles right through the final lap, while the historic depth of the track, from its origins as a center of open-wheel racing to its current role as a NASCAR-owned facility, gives the Straight Talk Wireless 500 a special significance.
