The history of Michigan International Speedway begins in the 1960s, when Lawrence LoPatin, owner of Windsor Raceway, wanted to expand his racing venue operations and ordered the construction of a new facility in Brooklyn, Michigan. The official groundbreaking took place on September 28, 1967, and just one year later, in October 1968, the first races were held on the new track. This makes the course one of the most traditional ovals on the NASCAR calendar.

Charles Moneypenny was responsible for the design, having previously designed the Daytona International Speedway. For the construction work, over 2.5 million cubic yards of earth were moved to form the moderately banked, approximately two-mile-long oval. Shortly after opening, however, the facility faced financial difficulties, which over the following decades led to multiple ownership changes, until the track eventually became part of the structure of the major NASCAR track operators.

The current layout measures 3.219 kilometers and consists of four turns whose banking allows drivers to maintain high corner speeds. This combination of length and banking makes Michigan one of the fastest tracks on the Cup Series calendar and places special demands on aerodynamics and tire management for the teams.

The first NASCAR race on the course took place on June 15, 1969, and went down as a memorable duel in the annals: Cale Yarborough prevailed against LeeRoy Yarbrough after both drivers battled wheel-to-wheel over the final 150 laps and even made contact in turn one on the last lap. Such close finishes have shaped the track’s reputation to this day.

The official lap record is held by Kevin Harvick, who circled the track in 0:36.093 in 2018, impressively demonstrating the speed potential of the oval. At the FireKeepers Casino 400 2025, Denny Hamlin emerged as the youngest winner and joins the long list of notable victors that Michigan International Speedway has produced throughout its history.
