Podio Gara
La storia del Michigan International Speedway inizia negli anni ’60, quando Lawrence LoPatin, proprietario del Windsor Raceway, volle espandere i suoi interessi nelle corse e ordinò la costruzione di una nuova struttura a Brooklyn, Michigan. Lo scavo ufficiale ebbe inizio il 28 settembre 1967 e già un anno dopo, nell’ottobre 1968, si disputarono le prime gare sul nuovo circuito. Per questo motivo il tracciato conta tra gli ovali più tradizionali del calendario NASCAR.
Charles Moneypenny fu responsabile della progettazione, avendo precedentemente progettato il Daytona International Speedway. Per i lavori di costruzione vennero spostati oltre 2,5 milioni di iarde cubiche di terreno per formare l’ovale a media pendenza lungo circa due miglia. Poco dopo l’apertura, l’impianto incontrò però difficoltà finanziarie, il che portò nei decenni seguenti a diversi cambi di proprietà, fino a quando il tracciato non passò nelle mani dei grandi operatori di circuiti NASCAR.
L’attuale tracciato misura 3,219 chilometri ed è composto da quattro curve che, grazie alla loro pendenza, consentono ai piloti di mantenere alte velocità di percorrenza in curva. Questa combinazione di lunghezza e inclinazione rende Michigan uno dei circuiti più veloci del calendario della Cup Series e pone particolari esigenze in termini di aerodinamica e gestione dei pneumatici per i team.
La prima gara NASCAR sul circuito si tenne il 15 giugno 1969 e rimase nella storia come un duello memorabile: Cale Yarborough ebbe la meglio su LeeRoy Yarbrough, dopo che entrambi i piloti si furono contesi il primato fianco a fianco per i ultimi 150 giri e persino si sfiorarono nell’ultima curva uno nella penultima chicane. Questi finali così serrati hanno caratterizzato la reputazione del circuito fino ad oggi.
Il record ufficiale della pista è detenuto da Kevin Harvick, che nel 2018 ha percorso il circuito in 0:36,093, dimostrando in modo impressionante il potenziale di velocità dell’ovale. Nel FireKeepers Casino 400 2025 Denny Hamlin si è imposto come vincitore più giovane e si inserisce così nella lunga lista di illustri vincitori che il Michigan International Speedway ha prodotto nel corso della sua storia.
