Live Fast Motorsports was founded in fall 2020 when B. J. McLeod and former Cup Series driver Matt Tifft partnered with experienced team owner Joe Falk to acquire the charter from Go Fas Racing. On November 20, 2020, the three officially announced the name of the new organization and announced their entry into the NASCAR Cup Series with the number 78. The debut followed at the 2021 Daytona 500, initially with Ford vehicles as part of a technical alliance with Stewart-Haas Racing.
A special chapter in the young history of the team is the sale of the charter in September 2023: Live Fast Motorsports parted with its starting rights to Spire Motorsports for approximately 40 million US dollars, at that time the highest amount ever paid for a Cup charter. As part of this strategic realignment, co-founder Matt Tifft stepped back from the ownership structure. The team headquarters remains in Mooresville, North Carolina, in the heart of NASCAR’s traditional industry, where numerous other racing teams also operate their facilities.
The team’s most intensive phase spanned 2021 to 2023, when Live Fast Motorsports competed for three full seasons with full charter status. B. J. McLeod was the primary driver of the number 78 during this period and achieved the team’s first top-10 finish with a ninth-place result in the Daytona night race in 2021. Things went even better in summer 2022, when McLeod finished seventh in the rain-delayed Daytona race, posting his best career result. Before the 2023 season, the team switched from Ford to Chevrolet and entered into a technical partnership with Richard Childress Racing, which continues to this day.
After the charter sale, Live Fast Motorsports has operated since 2024 as a part-time team without a permanent starting slot, focusing on select races such as superspeedways and road courses. The organization is now led by Jessica McLeod as Team Principal and CEO, while B. J. McLeod remains active as a driver and co-owner. For the 2026 season, McLeod and young driver Daniel Dye form the driver pairing in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, supported by the continuing technical partnership with Richard Childress Racing.
With this combination of experienced team owner and rising talent, Live Fast Motorsports continues its proven path in 2026 as a flexible, nimble part-time starter in the Cup field, ready to compete with the top teams at select opportunities.
