Ty Gibbs was born on October 4, 2002, in the United States and grew up as the grandson of NFL Hall of Famer and NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs in an environment that essentially predefined motorsport for him. He turned his first laps in karts on asphalt and dirt tracks around Mooresville, North Carolina, where he already proved himself against older drivers as a teenager. His talent showed early in Late Models too: in 2017 and 2018 he competed for Marlowe Racing in the CARS Late Model Stock Tour before celebrating his first major success in 2019 with a victory in the IceBreaker 125 at Myrtle Beach behind the wheel of the No. 18 for Nelson Motorsports.
The path upward led through NASCAR’s development series. In 2019, Gibbs collected multiple podium finishes in the K&N Pro Series East with Team DGR-Crosley and celebrated his first series victory in the Apple Barrel 125 at New Hampshire. A year later, he took over the cockpit for Joe Gibbs Racing in the newly renamed ARCA Menards Series East and finished as runner-up behind Sam Mayer. In 2021 came his breakthrough in the full ARCA Menards Series, before moving up to the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2022 where he succeeded immediately. Since 2023, he has been a fixture in the NASCAR Cup Series, where he competes in the No. 54 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing.
The greatest achievements of his still-young career date from 2021 and 2022: In the ARCA Menards Series, he won ten of twenty races in 2021 with the No. 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing and secured the title decisively. A year later, he followed suit in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, tallying seven wins and crowned himself champion with a victory at Phoenix Raceway, again in the No. 54 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. In the Cup Series, he was named the series’ Rookie of the Year in 2023 after finishing 18th in the overall standings in his first full year. He celebrated his first Cup victory at the Food City 500 in Bristol, supplemented by wins in showcase events like the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Open and the 2025 NASCAR In-Season Challenge.
In the 2026 season, Ty Gibbs remains the full-time driver for Joe Gibbs Racing and continues to pilot the No. 54 Toyota Camry XSE. After his rookie year and the following seasons in the Cup Series, the next logical step awaits him: converting the consistency of recent years into genuine championship opportunities and confirming the legacy of his success from the developmental series at the top level of NASCAR.
