Five laps before the end, chaos erupted up front, and Joey Logano seized the moment.
Joey Logano won the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night, the third playoff race of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series. The Team Penske driver capitalized on a tangle at the front five laps from the finish, dove to the inside past Ty Gibbs, Carson Hocevar, and Kyle Larson, and brought his Ford across the line first. It was Logano's 40th Cup victory, his third of the season, and already his third triumph in the legendary Bristol night race. Qualifying was called off due to poor weather, with the starting lineup determined by formula, featuring Kyle Larson on the pole ahead of Denny Hamlin.
Blaney dominates, then comes the wall
For much of the 500-lap race, the night belonged to Ryan Blaney. The Penske driver led 202 of the 500 laps, the best mark of the evening, and cruised to the Stage 2 victory. On Bristol's tight concrete oval, where traffic and clean line selection determine success or failure, Blaney's car looked like the fastest in the field for large stretches.
Forty-three laps from the finish, everything changed. While battling for second position, Blaney made contact with Carson Hocevar, who was making a move to the inside. As Blaney defended his line, Hocevar stayed on the throttle, resulting in contact at the rear. Blaney spun and hit the outside wall with full force. For the championship contender, the race was done, finishing 33rd and a major blow to his playoff hopes.
The confrontation didn't end on track. After being released from the infield care center, Blaney waited in pit road for Hocevar. As he climbed out of his car, Blaney approached him, and both drivers engaged in shoving and punches until safety personnel and team members separated them.
Five laps, three cars, one winner
The late-race cautions set up a green-flag restart eight laps from the end. Ty Gibbs took the lead initially ahead of pole-sitter Kyle Larson, but Hocevar pressed from behind and wedged himself between the two. In the thick lapped traffic, all three cars made contact, with the trio losing speed and track position in the same corner.
That's all Logano needed. The Penske driver, running third or fourth at that moment, dove to the inside past Gibbs, Hocevar, and Larson, taking the lead with five laps remaining. He didn't relinquish it to the checkered flag. Larson finished second, Hocevar secured third despite the incident, with Christopher Bell and Ty Gibbs rounding out the top five.
Points, damage, and looking ahead to Kansas
For Chase Briscoe, a strong comeback drive ended in heartbreak. After working his way from 26th on the grid into the top ten, he was forced to pit unscheduled for a suspension failure with four laps to go, finishing only 27th. Riley Herbst also didn't escape unscathed. After contact with Zane Smith, he spun, brushed the inside wall, and had to call it a day with 68 laps down.
For the championship picture, Blaney's DNF figures to carry real weight. When you're running the dominant car for most of the race and leave with zero points, it's easy to lose ground in the tight playoff format, while Logano heads into the coming weeks with his third win of the season and a strong points cushion. At Kansas for the Hollywood Casino 400 on September 27, we'll see whether Blaney can bounce back from the Bristol setback or if Logano carries that momentum forward.
