Podium Race
The history of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 is inseparably linked to the roots of NASCAR itself. On February 15, 1948, the very first NASCAR race took place at the legendary beach course at Daytona Beach, won by Red Byron in a Ford. From this improvised course made of sand and asphalt, the permanent facility later developed, which today is considered one of the most famous race tracks in the world and hosts both the Daytona 500 and the endurance classic Rolex 24.
Over the decades, Daytona International Speedway has become a permanent fixture on the NASCAR calendar, with its summer race now operating under the name Coke Zero Sugar 400. As the traditional conclusion of the regular season, held in late August, the race marks the final test before the playoffs begin and thus brings special tactical significance to the steep banking of the facility.
The layout of the track is characterized by its classic oval design with a length of 4.023 kilometers and a total of four turns. The steeply banked corners force drivers to speeds that are rarely seen anywhere else on the NASCAR calendar, and ensure that the vehicles move in a tight pack. It is precisely this closeness that makes Daytona one of the most unpredictable venues in the series, where drafting games and daring maneuvers can determine victory or devastating failure.
For those seeking the pulse of the track in numbers, it can be found in the official track record: Erik Jones set the fastest mark at Daytona International Speedway in 2020 with a lap time of 0:43.682 minutes. This record underscores just how intense speedway action can be even under racing conditions when drafting and engine performance work together optimally.
The winners’ list of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 reads like a who’s who of present-day NASCAR, and the most recent edition fits seamlessly into the tradition. In 2025, Ryan Blaney secured the victory and once again confirmed the great importance of experience and nerve strength on this special track. For the 2026 edition, this same mixture of tradition, speed, and unpredictability is sure to provide excitement once again.
