Podium Race
The history of today’s EchoPark Speedway began shortly after the success of the first Daytona 500. Convinced that Atlanta would also find an audience for high-speed oval racing, a group of real estate developers led by Garland Bagley built a 1.5-mile racetrack between 1959 and 1960 approximately 25 miles south of the city in Hampton, Georgia. The investment of roughly $1.8 million paid off immediately: Fireball Roberts won the first Cup race at the new facility in 1960, laying the foundation for a tradition that continues to this day.
Initially known as Atlanta International Raceway, the track bore this name until 1990, when it was renamed Atlanta Motor Speedway; today it operates under the name EchoPark Speedway for sponsorship reasons. The facility quickly became a venue for thrilling NASCAR battles and was the site of one of the most memorable championship finales in series history in 1992. Over the decades, names and sponsors changed, but the track’s character as a fast, tight quad-oval remained a fixed part of the Cup schedule.
A decisive turning point came in 1997, when the facility underwent a fundamental redesign and received its characteristic quad-oval layout. In 2021, another important measure followed: the track was repaved and the banking in the turns was adjusted to 28 degrees, which noticeably changed the handling characteristics. At 2.478 kilometers in length with only four turns, EchoPark Speedway ranks among the most demanding ovals on the calendar; the steep banking in the turns results in high attrition rates and demanding, physically intensive racing.
The track record dates from 2024 and belongs to Josh Berry, who completed a lap in 0:29.361 minutes, demonstrating the speed limits of modern Gen-7 cars on this layout. Most recently, Chase Elliott prevailed in 2025, joining the long list of successful drivers on this historic track. With two Cup dates per season, EchoPark Speedway remains a fixture where speed, tradition, and tactical skill regularly combine to create thrilling racing.
