The history of Watkins Glen International reaches back to the postwar era, when Cameron Argetsinger established a street circuit through the town of Watkins Glen in New York State in 1948. The original course ran along public roads around the town and quickly became a mainstay of American sports car racing. Following a serious accident in 1952, the decision was made to move racing off public streets, which eventually led to the construction of a permanent road course.

In 1956, the new, permanent race track opened on a roughly 550-acre site southwest of the village, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. Engineers from Cornell University and consultant Bill Milliken played a key role in designing the layout, which was newly constructed without any overlap with the former street sections. Over the following decades, Watkins Glen developed into one of the most storied venues in North American motorsports and served as the home of the US Grand Prix from 1961 to 1980, making it a fixture on the Formula 1 calendar.

The track also holds historical significance for NASCAR: shortly after opening, a Grand National race took place here, won by Buck Baker ahead of Fireball Roberts, laying the foundation for the enduring connection between Watkins Glen and the stock car series that continues to this day. The current layout used for the NASCAR Cup Series measures 3.949 kilometers and features seven turns, a mix of high-speed sections and technically demanding corners that has earned the track its reputation as one of the few genuine road course tests on the Cup calendar.

In recent times, Watkins Glen has established itself as a stage for spectacular battles, where experience on road courses often decides the outcome. Most recently, Shane van Gisbergen claimed victory in 2025, once again underscoring the significance of drivers with a road course background at this historic venue.
