Denny Hamlin

James Dennis Alan Hamlin was born on November 18, 1980, in Tampa, Florida, and grew up mostly in Chesterfield Court House, Virginia. At just seven years old in 1988, he began his motorsports career in karting. By the time he turned 15, he had earned five regional kart championships in three different classes and won the WKA Manufacturers Cup in 1997. That same year, he moved to Mini-Stocks and became the youngest Track Champion ever at Langley Speedway in Virginia.

Through the Grand-Stock division starting in 1998 and Late Model Stock Cars from 2000 onward, Hamlin steadily worked his way up; in 2002 he won ten Late-Model races, and in 2003 he had 25 victories and 30 pole positions from 36 starts. In 2004, he signed a development deal with Joe Gibbs Racing and made his debut that same year in the Craftsman Truck Series, the ARCA RE/MAX Series, and the Busch Series. In 2005, he competed in his first full Busch Series season, finished fifth in the championship, and made his debut in the then-named Nextel Cup Series in Kansas. 2006 marked his breakthrough: as a rookie, he finished third in the overall standings and was named Rookie of the Year.

Since then, Hamlin has been among NASCAR’s most successful yet also most star-crossed drivers: with 64 Cup Series wins, he holds the record for most career victories without a championship title, despite reaching 19 of the past 20 playoff seasons and finishing second in the championship in both 2010 and 2025. His greatest achievements include three Daytona 500 victories in 2016, 2019, and 2020—including back-to-back wins—three Southern 500 titles in 2010, 2017, and 2021, and the Coca-Cola 600 win in 2022. He also won the All-Star Race in 2015 and 2026 and the Busch Light Clash four times. In 2023, he was named to the list of NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers; as co-owner of 23XI Racing, which he runs alongside Michael Jordan, he also celebrated an owner’s victory at the 2026 Daytona 500.

In the 2026 season, Hamlin continues to drive full-time for Joe Gibbs Racing, which he has driven for since their development deal in 2004 and with whom he has become one of the most defining figures in the organization. Following his second runner-up finish in 2025, his focus turns once again to the one trophy that has eluded him: the Cup Series championship title. With his experience, his speed on the big speedways, and his dual role as a driver and co-owner of 23XI Racing, Hamlin remains one of the most prominent names on the driver roster.
