The idea for the short oval originated in the late 1940s when a group of local businessmen led by Enoch Staley decided to build a race track in the region. After acquiring the land and completing construction, the first race took place on May 18, 1947, initially on an unpaved five-eighths-mile track. The short distance creates high lap frequency and places demanding requirements on tire management and driving precision, as mistakes on such tight ground are rarely forgiven. The official track record dates from 2024, when Kyle Larson circled the track in 18.362 seconds, a time that impressively underscores the increased performance capability following the repaving.

Since its reintroduction to the Cup program, North Wilkesboro has quickly established itself as a popular venue where tight racing and historic setting converge. Most recently, Christopher Bell claimed victory on the legendary short oval in 2025, etching his name into the track’s young but significant renaissance history.
