The Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, ranks among the newer major facilities on the NASCAR calendar. Construction began in May 1999, and on June 2, 2001, the track celebrated its inaugural event with an ARCA Series race, won by Jason Jarrett. From the start, the vision was clear: to create a modern, fan-friendly racing facility in the American Midwest suited not only for NASCAR but also for other major racing series.
The Kansas Speedway is owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation, which pursued this project with the goal of tapping into a new market for oval racing. In its inaugural year alone, the facility made motorsports history when both NASCAR and the Indy Racing League competed in the same weekend—an unprecedented configuration in American racing at the time. The IndyCar Series remained a fixture until 2011, before the oval’s focus shifted entirely to NASCAR.
The layout is a classic 1.5-mile tri-oval measuring 2.414 kilometers with four turns featuring variable banking between 17 and 20 degrees, enabling high speeds and tight positional battles. On the front straightaway, the banking drops to 9 to 11 degrees, while the backstretch features just 5 degrees of banking—a contrast that presents drivers with different demands on acceleration and balance. The expansive grandstand configuration also allows spectators to view large sections of the track simultaneously.
The Hollywood Casino 400, traditionally contested in the fall as part of the NASCAR Playoffs, has established itself as one of the most prestigious races held at Kansas since the facility’s opening. Most recently, Chase Elliott claimed victory in 2025, further testament to the fact that the Speedway continues to deliver thrilling and unpredictable racing after more than two decades of operation.
