Ed Carpenter Racing, ECR for short, was founded in November 2011 and made its first NTT IndyCar Series start in 2012. Behind the team stands an ownership group of four Indiana businessmen: Ed Carpenter himself, Ted Gelov, Tony George, and Stuart Reed. The team is based in Indianapolis, right at the heart of American motorsport, just a few kilometers from the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With the 2026 season, ECR enters its fifteenth year in the series, a remarkable run for a team that originally started as a pure oval-racing project.
A distinctive feature of the team’s more recent history is the expansion of its infrastructure: ECR has announced the construction of a new headquarters, planned as the first major building project under the Grand Park District master plan in Westfield, Indiana. The move underlines the team’s ambition to develop from a classic family business into a professionally structured organization without losing its close ties to its roots in Indiana. The name ECR itself is refreshingly simple to explain, it simply stands for Ed Carpenter Racing and points directly to the team owner and active driver.
ECR’s success story is inseparable from Ed Carpenter himself. As an owner-driver, he repeatedly showed his qualifying strength at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, securing pole position for the Indy 500 there in 2013, 2014, and 2018, a feat that made him one of the most accomplished oval specialists of his generation. Over the years, the team has collected eight wins across every type of track on the schedule, from street courses to road courses to short ovals and speedways, evidence of the versatility ECR has made its trademark since its founding.
In the current era, ECR continues to be led by Ed Carpenter, who also remains active as a driver and traditionally pilots a third car at the Indy 500. For the 2026 season, the team fields a driver lineup comprising Alexander Rossi, Christian Rasmussen, and Ed Carpenter himself. Rasmussen, who delivered the team’s best result in several years with a win at the Milwaukee Mile in the 2025 season, has since signed a multi-year extension with ECR, a clear signal of continuity. At the start of the 15th season in January 2026, ECR also announced an expansion of its leadership and engineering structures to strengthen the organizational foundation for further growth. With the planned move to Westfield, the new driver pairing, and the momentum from a strong 2025 campaign, ECR looks optimistically toward the coming IndyCar season.
