Ed Carpenter

Ed Carpenter, born in 1981 in the USA, grew up in an environment closely connected to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and found early access to motorsport. As early as 1989, he started in Quarter-Midgets and won numerous local and national races in this class. From there, he advanced through the USAC system, where he competed in Midgets, Sprint Cars, and the Silver Crown Series and was named USAC National Sprint Car Rookie of the Year in 2002. Unlike many European single-seater drivers, Carpenter did not follow the classic kart-Formula 3-Formula 2 path, but instead remained consistently rooted in the North American oval and open-wheel racing environment.

Carpenter took the next step in 2002 in the then Infiniti Pro Series, today’s Indy NXT. There, he immediately established himself as a fast junior driver and finished third in the overall standings in both 2002 and 2003. A particular highlight of this phase was his victory in the very first Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2003, a race that to this day is considered an important milestone of his junior career. He has also been active in the IndyCar Series since 2003 and has continuously gained experience on various types of circuits over the years.

In the IndyCar Series, Carpenter celebrated three victories: in 2011 at the Kentucky Indy 300 for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, in 2012 at the MAVTV 500 at Fontana, his very first success with his own team Ed Carpenter Racing, founded that same year, and in 2014 at the Firestone 600 in Texas, again for ECR. His career is particularly closely linked to the Indianapolis 500: with pole positions in 2013, 2014, and 2018, he is among only ten drivers in the long history of the race to have achieved three or more poles at the Indy 500. In 2018, starting from pole position, he also achieved his best result to date at the legendary 500-mile race with second place, having led the most laps during the event.
