At the Bass Pro Shops Night Race on Saturday night, the „Last Great Colosseum
On Friday, September 18, and Saturday, September 19, the NASCAR Cup Series makes its stop in Bristol, Tennessee, for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race, the 29th of 36 races in the season and the cutoff race for the 16-driver playoff round. Over 500 laps on the 0.533-mile concrete oval with 24 to 28 degree banking will reduce the field from 16 to 12 drivers, spread across three stages of 125, 125, and 250 laps. Anyone finishing outside the top 12 in points when the night is over will be eliminated from the championship fight.
The Cutoff: Four Names on the Bubble
Austin Cindric holds the last locked spot in the Penske Ford number 2, sitting twelve points above the cutline. Behind him sits a tight pack of four drivers battling for the remaining starting spots for the next round: Chris Buescher is three points below the line, Ryan Preece is five back, William Byron six, and Daniel Suárez eleven. All four are currently running on an elimination position.
On a flat but steeply banked bullring like Bristol, a single mistake in tight traffic, a penalty on pit road, or an unfortunate caution phase can wipe out an entire point cushion. That's exactly what makes this race a nail-biter for drivers in the bottom tier of the top 16 with no buffer to spare.
Larson With Momentum, Bell as Defending Champion
Kyle Larson arrives in Bristol with real momentum at his back. At Gateway, he ended a 51-race winless streak and has already clinched his spot in the round of 12 as a two-time winner of the Bass Pro Shops Night Race. That combination of fresh form and track history makes him one of the names to watch Saturday night, even if Bristol is notoriously unpredictable.
Over at Joe Gibbs Racing, Denny Hamlin continues to deliver consistency at the top of the overall standings with 2,168 points, just ahead of Larson and Christopher Bell. Bell himself comes in as the winner at Darlington and the defending champion of last year's Bristol Night Race, both JGR drivers already locked into the next round. Along with Chase Briscoe, who sits 49 points above the cutline and comfortably in safe territory, that gives the team three cars in the established part of the field.
Schedule and What's on the Line
The weekend kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. Eastern with the Cup Series' combined practice and qualifying session. Saturday features pre-race coverage starting at 7 p.m., with the field taking the green flag at 7:30 p.m. for 500 laps under the lights.
Between the locked-in names like Larson, Bell, and Hamlin and the four-driver pack chasing Buescher, Preece, Byron, and Suárez, there's more than just starting positions at stake tonight, it's the question of who gets to continue fighting for a championship. On a track known for sheet metal damage, pressurized restarts, and little forgiveness for mistakes, the cutline situation is unlikely to settle down until the final lap.
