Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, is one of the most traditional racetracks of the NASCAR Cup Series and has been the heart of American stock car racing for decades. As a quad-oval speedway facility with a length of 2.414 kilometers and four turns, the track embodies that blend of speed and technical precision that makes the series so compelling. Over generations, the course has become a fixture on the calendar and is deeply woven into the history of modern NASCAR racing.

From 1999 to 2009, the facility was named Lowe’s Motor Speedway for sponsorship reasons before returning to its original designation. Humpy Wheeler played a defining role in the track’s development, serving as General Manager for 33 years and bringing numerous innovations to the speedway. Under his leadership, the first facility of its kind with condominiums directly on the grounds was built, along with a restaurant overlooking the racetrack and the first floodlight system of a speedway facility of this magnitude, which made night racing possible.

The track layout itself, the quad-oval with its four turns, forms the basis for classic oval races such as the Bank of America 400. Beyond the oval, Charlotte Motor Speedway has also established itself as a venue for motorsports: in 2018, the so-called ROVAL, a 2.28-mile road course variant with 14 turns, was introduced and has since served as a Playoff racetrack for the Cup Series, making NASCAR history. For the Bank of America 400, however, the classic oval with its high banking and tight turns remains the defining feature.

The track’s history is also marked by legendary moments under the lights. The Winston All-Star Race held in 1992 under the title “One Hot Night” is still considered one of the most memorable events in track history, following a collision between the crews of Darrell Waltrip and Rusty Wallace in 1989 that made headlines. At the most recent running of the Bank of America 400 in 2025, Ross Chastain emerged victorious, joining the long list of notable winners who have made Charlotte Motor Speedway one of the most prestigious venues on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.
