Joe Gibbs Racing was founded in 1991 by Joe Gibbs, a coach who led the Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl titles as an NFL coach. In 1992, the team competed in its first full NASCAR Cup season. Son J.D. Gibbs took on the role of team president in 1997 and significantly shaped the organization until his death in 2019, while Coy Gibbs served as owner of the No. 11 until his passing in 2022.
A distinctive chapter in the team’s history is the path from the American football field to the racetrack that Joe Gibbs took after his coaching career. Starting in 1998, the team’s current headquarters was built in Huntersville, North Carolina, just a few miles north of Charlotte. The facility now spans well over 300,000 square feet and combines chassis construction, engine development, and engineering under one roof, a location that remains the technical center of JGR to this day.
The team’s most successful phase began in the early 2000s. Bobby Labonte secured Joe Gibbs Racing’s first driver and manufacturer championship in 2000, followed by Tony Stewart, who won the championship in 2002 and 2005. After the switch from General Motors to Toyota in 2008, the success continued: Kyle Busch claimed the first Cup championship for Toyota ever in 2015 and repeated the title win in 2019. This gives JGR a total of five manufacturer titles in 2000, 2002, 2005, 2015, and 2019 in the record books.
Today, the team’s operations are led by Team President Dave Alpern, who has guided the organization since 2016, while Joe Gibbs continues to serve as team owner behind the scenes. In the NASCAR Cup Series, JGR competes with four vehicles: Denny Hamlin in the No. 11, Christopher Bell in the No. 20, Chase Briscoe in the No. 19, and Ty Gibbs in the No. 54. With this driver lineup, the team heads into the 2026 season, with Hamlin as the most experienced and winning driver on the roster continuing to chase another championship, while the younger generation around Ty Gibbs and Chase Briscoe are expected to bring fresh momentum in the pursuit of wins and playoff berths.
