While fists flew on pit road, Joey Logano cruised to the most important victory of his career.
Joey Logano captured his 40th career NASCAR Cup Series win at the Bass Pro Shops Night Race on Bristol Motor Speedway, surpassing Bobby Allison as the most successful driver in Penske history. The three-time champion prevailed on the 0.533-mile concrete oval, tied Mark Martin on the all-time NASCAR wins list, and secured an early berth into the next Chase round of the 2026 season.
Calm in the Bristol Chaos
The 500-lap race delivered everything short-track fans crave: 13 lead changes, ten cautions, and countless rubbing contests. Logano was running strong from lap one and led a dominant 81 laps in Stage 1, banking crucial stage points for his effort.
During the middle portion of the race, crew chief Paul Wolfe switched to tire and fuel conservation while young guns Ty Gibbs and Carson Hocevar battled hard up front for the top spot. Logano stayed consistent in the three and four positions during this stretch, lurking within striking distance and waiting for his opportunity to pounce.
The Perfect Move in the Final Laps
After the last restart with just a few laps remaining, the battle between Hocevar and Gibbs for the lead intensified. Both drivers blocked each other on the outside lane and wore themselves down in the fight, leaving the inside lane wide open. On lap 494 of 500, Logano spotted the gap and dove to the bottom, smartly working through lapped traffic and slipping past both rivals.
Over the final six laps, Logano only had to hold off a charging Kyle Larson, which he managed with ease. At the checkered flag, his margin of victory was 1.248 seconds. "Bristol is just electrifying," Logano said after the race. "We had a fantastic race car and we knew it was going to get aggressive at the end. I was just in the right place at the right time."
Pit Road Scuffle Overshadows the Historic Moment
That Logano's milestone win nearly got lost in the immediate aftermath had a clear cause: on pit road, his teammate Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar tangled. Hocevar had spun Blaney while battling for second place in lap 458, and after the race ended, the two exchanged words and fists.
Logano took it in stride. "I'll probably be watching those videos all week. People are probably going to forget who won the race," he joked during the victory lane interviews.
For Team Penske, none of that changed the bottom line of the evening. With 40 wins, Logano now ranks 20th on the all-time NASCAR wins list, tied with Mark Martin, and becomes the most successful driver in Penske's history, a distinction previously held by Bobby Allison.
Chase Ticket and Championship Outlook
Logano's third win of the 2026 season carries immediate consequences in the championship battle. In the points standings, he climbs four positions to third and now trails new points leader Kyle Larson by just 16 points.
More importantly, the victory secures Team Penske an early advance to the next Chase round. That should put Logano firmly back in the title conversation heading into the business end of the season, and with Larson as a direct competitor in the standings, the rest of the Chase figures to be every bit as fiercely contested as the closing laps of Bristol.
