Podium Race
The Milwaukee Mile ranks among the most historic racing circuits in the world. Originally built in 1876 as a horse racing track, the grounds were purchased in 1891 by the Agricultural Society of the State of Wisconsin and became the permanent home of the Wisconsin State Fair. The first automobile race took place here in 1903, then still on a dusty dirt-track surface. Since then, motorsport has been conducted without interruption, which is why the facility in West Allis is today regarded as the oldest continuously operated motorsports racing circuit in the world—a distinction that few other tracks worldwide can claim.
The Milwaukee Mile is located on the grounds of the Wisconsin State Fair Park and has been under changing administration over the decades, always closely tied to the operation of the Wisconsin State Fair itself. Racing series such as the AAA Contest Board, USAC, CART, the Champ Car World Series, and finally the IndyCar Series have sanctioned events here, with open-wheel racing documented at this venue since 1937. This long, nearly uninterrupted continuity makes the track a living archive of American motorsports history.
Today’s layout presents itself as a compact, flat asphalt oval measuring 1.633 kilometers in length with four turns, all featuring minimal banking. Despite its seemingly simple geometry, the Milwaukee Mile demands high precision from IndyCar drivers at the limit, as the short straights and tight turn radiuses leave little room for error. With a spectator capacity of more than 37,000 seats and modern facilities within the State Fair Park, the facility remains a fully functional venue for major events despite its age.
In recent IndyCar history, the Milwaukee Mile has repeatedly proven itself as a stage for fast lap times and thrilling battles. The track record is held by Hélio Castroneves, who in 2015 set the fastest lap ever recorded with 0:22.121, evidence of the enormous speed potential of this short oval. Most recently, Christian Rasmussen prevailed as the winner in 2025, joining the long list of successful drivers who have triumphed at this historic venue. For 2026, the doubleheader at the world’s oldest active speedway facility promises intense racing and high-stakes competition in the tight four-turn layout.
