Kyle Larson leads the Chase standings heading into the fifth of ten Chase races, with Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell close behind.

NASCAR's Cup Series heads to Las Vegas this weekend: On Sunday, October 4th, the South Point 400 takes place at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway's 1.5-mile oval, 267 laps or 400.5 miles, with the green flag at 5:30 p.m. ET following coverage starting at 5 p.m. on USA Network. It's the 31st of 36 races on the season and the fifth of ten races in the Chase, which this year runs under the cumulative points format across all ten Chase races, without elimination rounds. With that in mind, every point counts in Vegas, and at the top, Kyle Larson has pulled clear after his Kansas performance.

Larson's Drive After the Kansas Sweep

In Kansas, Larson banked the full 76 points, won both stages and led 235 of 267 laps. It was already his second victory in the first four Chase races, and in the standings he now sits atop with 2,282 points, 26 ahead of Denny Hamlin (2,256) and 50 ahead of Christopher Bell (2,232).

Another strong showing in Vegas, where stage wins bring additional bonus points, should further pad his advantage heading into the final five races of the season, though the tight field behind him hasn't been settled yet.

Hamlin Searching for an Answer

Hamlin led much of the 2026 regular season standings before Larson's recent performances shifted the picture. In Kansas, the driver of the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing crossed the line in third and stayed on the lead lap for the 29th consecutive race, a streak that underscores his consistency in this Chase.

Las Vegas is considered one of Hamlin's strongest intermediate tracks, which could make the South Point 400 a fitting opportunity to chip into Larson's lead before the season enters its decisive phase.

Stage Points and Penske on the Move

Under the cumulative points format, the ten bonus points for stage wins count just as much as fastest lap bonuses, and on a fast 1.5-mile tri-oval with multiple racing lines like Las Vegas, tire management, timing on green flag stops and clean air determine who leaves with the most points.

Team Penske arrives with momentum: Austin Cindric finished second in Kansas, while teammate Joey Logano sits fourth and Ryan Blaney fifth in the overall standings. The organization has shown pace on 1.5-mile tracks lately and figures to aim at challenging Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing for control of the stages in Vegas before the Chase settles down over its final five races.
