At the fifth of eight FIA-WEC season rounds, Austin hosts a manufacturer championship battle that could hardly be tighter, while COTA's technical layout also gives American squads a special stage.

From September 4–6, 2026, the Circuit of the Americas in Austin welcomes the FIA World Endurance Championship for round five of eight, the Lone Star Le Mans over six hours on the 5.513-kilometer, twenty-turn layout. Toyota arrives as the Hypercar manufacturer standings leader with 132 points, but its margin over BMW has narrowed to just five points following the Munich squad's victory at the six-hour race in São Paulo in July, after Toyota had started the summer with a commanding cushion following its Le Mans triumph in June.

Since the regulation change for the 2026 season, the Hypercar class counts only manufacturer points, with both factory cars from a marque combined, while additional guest entries no longer factor into the standings. That's precisely what makes the current situation so tight: Toyota leads BMW 132 to 127 points, a deficit that could dissolve or widen at a single grueling race like Austin's six hours.

The driver standings are even more symmetric. René Rast and Robin Frijns in the number 20 BMW are tied at the top with the Toyota trio of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway, and Nyck de Vries in the number 7 car. Ferrari, the defending manufacturer champion, follows in third with 88 points and will likely need a strong showing on COTA's technically demanding circuit to avoid dropping out of the title fight for good.

A Weekend with a Tight Schedule

The Austin program follows the standard WEC pattern of multiple practice sessions and a two-stage qualifying system. On Friday, September 4, two free practice sessions run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. local time (CDT). Saturday begins with a third free practice from 11:00 a.m. to noon, then moves to the LMGT3 class qualifying and Hyperpole session in the afternoon, followed by the Hypercar machines between 3:40 and 4:15 p.m.

The actual race takes place Sunday, September 6, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. local time, six hours that will demand high concentration from both driver trios and pit crews on COTA's undulating, ever-changing layout, especially during strategy windows around potential full-course yellow phases.

LMGT3: Corvette Up Front, American Pride with Ford

In the LMGT3 class, where a true team championship still exists unlike the Hypercars, the starting position is multifaceted. Corvette Racing leads the championship with the number 33 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R fielded by TF Sport, driven in part by Jonny Edgar, who tops the driver standings with 76 points. Nicky Catsburg follows with 72 points, Ben Keating sits third with 54 points, while Riccardo Pera and Richard Lietz in the number 92 Manthey Porsche lurk in fourth with 49 points.

Extra American flavor comes via Ford Racing through Proton Competition, which brings two Mustang GT3s with US drivers Logan Sargeant and Eric Powell to the grid, a combination that adds additional local color to a race on home soil.

Cadillac on Home Ground, Looking Beyond This Weekend

Cadillac Racing arrives in Austin seeking redemption after a difficult weekend in São Paulo. Local hero Ricky Taylor has been slotted into the number 12 Cadillac V-Series.R alongside the regular drivers, an arrangement that should bring added attention and perhaps extra motivation to the American factory team, which currently sits fourth in the manufacturer standings with 60 points.

Beyond the race weekend itself, attention is already turning to the future of the class. Genesis Magma Racing used time ahead of the event for private testing with the GMR-001 prototype at COTA, while Ferrari and Aston Martin plan to begin private test runs following the race to explore early development steps for the 499P and Valkyrie evolutions planned for 2027. How the tight Toyota-BMW manufacturer battle reads after six hours in Austin, and whether Ferrari can keep pace, will become clear only Sunday evening.
