The history of Daytona International Speedway began in the early 1950s, when Bill France Sr. recognized that traditional races on Daytona Beach were reaching their limits. The growing spectator numbers and increasing development along the coast made a permanent track necessary. In 1959, the new facility opened, permanently replacing the legendary Daytona Beach and Road Course, where land speed records had once been set. This also marked the end of an era in which races were held directly on the Atlantic coast.

From the beginning, the track remained firmly in the hands of the France family and the International Speedway Corporation they founded, which is closely connected to NASCAR. This ownership structure ensured continuity but also shaped the tight integration between track operations and the racing series, which persists to this day. This close relationship between operator and racing series remains a defining characteristic of American oval tracks today.

The layout of Daytona International Speedway is a tri-oval with a length of 4.023 kilometers and only four turns, which with 31-degree banking rank among the most challenging in the NASCAR schedule. In the tri-oval zone, the banking measures 18 degrees, while the straightaways progressively rise between two and six degrees, enabling high lap speeds and intense drafting. Along with Talladega and Atlanta, Daytona ranks among the classic drafting tracks in the series. In 2010, the surface was completely replaced after the racing surface had partially broken apart during an earlier race.

The official lap record of the NASCAR Cup Series belongs to Erik Jones, who drove the fastest lap ever recorded at the Daytona 500 in 2020 with a time of 0:43.682 minutes. The winner’s list of the race reads like a who’s who of stock car history, most recently Ryan Blaney won in 2025. Weather surprises, spectacular crashes, and dramatic photo finishes have solidified Daytona 500’s reputation as “The Great American Race” over the decades and make each running a highlight of the season.
