Helio Castroneves

Hélio Castroneves was born on May 10, 1975, in São Paulo, Brazil, the son of car dealer Hélio Castro Neves and former teacher Sandra Alves de Castro Neves. At just ten years old, he began his karting career and won the Brazilian Karting Championship in 1989 before moving up to formula racing. Through Formula Chevrolet Brazil and Formula 3 Sudamericana, where he finished vice champion in 1993 and 1994, his path led him in 1995 to the British Formula Three Championship, where he finished third overall with Paul Stewart Racing.

After a detour through Indy Lights, where he finished vice champion behind Tony Kanaan in 1997, Castroneves made his debut in 1998 with Bettenhausen Racing in the Champ Car CART series; in 1999 he switched to Hogan Racing. From 2000 onwards, he drove for Team Penske, where he won three races each in his first two years. In 2001, he debuted in the Indy Racing League and immediately won the Indianapolis 500, marking the beginning of an extraordinary career in American motorsport’s elite.

The greatest successes of his career are closely tied to the Indianapolis 500: Following his debut victory in 2001, he triumphed in 2002 and 2009, both for Team Penske, and again in 2021 at age 46 for Meyer Shank Racing, placing him among only four drivers in the ranks of four-time Indy 500 winners. In the IndyCar championship standings, he finished vice champion in 2002, 2008, 2013, and 2014, but never won a title there. In sports car racing, he captured the overall title in 2020 with Team Penske and Ricky Taylor in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the DPi class; he also won the 24 Hours of Daytona three consecutive times, in 2021 with Wayne Taylor Racing and in 2022 and 2023 with Meyer Shank Racing. He also became popular for his fence-climbing celebrations after victories, earning him the nickname Spider-Man.

In the 2026 season, Castroneves continues as a full-time driver for Meyer Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian in the IndyCar Series, driving the Dallara-Honda with the number 06. Following his historic fourth Indy 500 victory in 2021 and the Daytona successes with the team, the partnership with Meyer Shank has long become a cornerstone of his career. Well into his 50s, the Brazilian remains one of the defining faces of American motorsports and will once again attempt to add further chapters to his impressive record in the new season.
