6 Hours of Barcelona 2026

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the Montmeló suburb was built in 1991 on the initiative of the Catalan regional government, which wanted to secure a modern, international-standard Grand Prix venue for Catalonia. After only around 15 months of construction, the facility was completed and took over the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix from Jerez de la Frontera that same year, hosting it without interruption ever since. Its central location near Barcelona and excellent transport links quickly made the track a fixture of the international racing calendar.

The layout is considered particularly versatile: fast sections such as the long start-finish straight and Turn 3 (Repsol) meet a technically demanding, twisty middle sector. This combination of high speed and precision work makes the circuit a representative benchmark for car and driver alike, which is why it long served as the preferred venue for Formula 1 winter testing before teams later moved to other locations.

The current layout measures 4.657 kilometres with 14 corners, six left-handers and eight right-handers. Varying radii and several long braking zones demand careful tyre management and brake balance from the teams, while the wide start-finish straight favours slipstream battles and overtaking.

Besides Formula 1, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is also a fixture on the MotoGP calendar (Catalan Grand Prix) and has hosted numerous other international series over the years, including touring car and GT racing. This versatility and solid infrastructure made the venue an obvious choice when a new host had to be found at short notice.

For the FIA WEC, the 6 Hours of Barcelona 2026 marks a debut: after the Qatar 1812km, originally scheduled for October, had to be cancelled due to the tense security situation in the Middle East, Barcelona steps in as the replacement venue for one of the season’s final two rounds. Together with the debut in Monza, the round in Catalonia forms the European conclusion to a season whose final phase now unfolds on two storied European circuits instead of in the desert.
