Podio Gara
La storia del Pocono Raceway inizia a metà degli anni ’60, quando la famiglia Mattioli ha cercato più di 30 proprietà nei Pocono Mountains della Pennsylvania per trovare la location ideale per un nuovo circuito. L’8 luglio 1965 si è tenuta la posa della prima pietra ufficiale, inizialmente con il nome Pocono Mountains International Raceway. La prima fase di costruzione è stata completata nell’ottobre 1968, consentendo alla struttura di Blakeslee di iniziare le operazioni regolari l’anno successivo.
Fino ad oggi la gestione del circuito rimane nelle mani della famiglia Mattioli, che insieme alla famiglia Igdalsky ha costruito e sviluppato continuamente il Pocono Raceway nel corso dei decenni. Dalla sua apertura, ha ospitato varie serie, dalla NASCAR Cup Series all’IndyCar Series fino alla IMSA GT Championship, guadagnandosi nel corso degli anni la reputazione di vera istituzione motorsportiva nel nord-est degli USA.
Il caratteristico Tri-Oval di 4,023 chilometri si distingue per le sue sole tre curve, ognuna con raggio e angolo di inclinazione diversi. Questa particolarità ha dato al circuito il soprannome Tricky Triangle, poiché nessuna sezione è uguale all’altra e i piloti devono adattare costantemente il loro setup. Per i crew chief questo rappresenta un’equazione complessa di consumo di carburante, gestione degli pneumatici e esecuzione precisa dei pit stop, poiché ogni errore strategico su questa combinazione di layout è punito senza pietà.
Nella storia dei vincitori della NASCAR Cup Series spicca particolarmente Denny Hamlin, detentore del record assoluto di tutte le gare al Pocono che si sono svolte per la distanza intera o addirittura in overtime. Notevole fu anche l’anno 2020, quando Hamlin e Kevin Harvick durante un doppio fine settimana hanno invertito esattamente i loro piazzamenti dalla prima gara alla seconda. Di recente, Chase Briscoe ha prevalso su Tricky Triangle nel 2025, inserendosi nella lunga lista di vincitori illustri di questo circuito dalla ricca tradizione.
