Team Penske was founded in 1966 by Roger Penske and made its debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona. In the NASCAR Cup Series, the organization made its entrance in 1972 at the Riverside race, when Mark Donohue took the wheel of an AMC Matador. Just in January 1973 at the same venue, the team achieved its first Cup victory, an early testament to the ambitions Roger Penske pursued with his racing operation.
In 1977, Penske temporarily withdrew from the NASCAR scene to focus on IndyCar and sports car racing. The team returned in 1991 with former champion Rusty Wallace in the No. 2 and remained active until 2005, with 37 wins during that period. Another distinctive feature of the team’s history is its location: since the mid-2000s, Team Penske has operated from a sprawling facility covering approximately 105 acres in Mooresville, North Carolina, where NASCAR, IndyCar, and sports car programs are united under one roof. Due to severe flooding in Pennsylvania, the planned relocation was executed even earlier than originally scheduled.
The team’s greatest period of success began in 2008, when Ryan Newman in the No. 12 scored Penske’s first Daytona 500 victory. In 2012, Brad Keselowski won the first NASCAR Cup championship in team history in the No. 2 Dodge, followed in 2015 by Joey Logano with the second Daytona 500 success. In 2018, Logano secured the second title in the No. 22 Ford, before an unprecedented streak of three consecutive championships unfolded between 2022 and 2024: Logano triumphed again in 2022 and 2024, while in 2023 Ryan Blaney claimed the championship in the No. 12 Ford. During the same period, in 2022, Austin Cindric also won the Daytona 500 in the No. 2.
The team continues to be led by Roger Penske as owner and chairman, while Michael Nelson serves as President of NASCAR Operations managing day-to-day operations and Travis Geisler acts as Vice President of Competition. For the 2026 season, Team Penske is again relying on Joey Logano in the No. 22, Ryan Blaney in the No. 12, and Austin Cindric in the No. 2, all competing in the Ford Mustang. Following the historic championship streak from 2022 to 2024, the organization is now focused on building on these successes and continuing its dominance.
