Will Power was born on March 1, 1981, in Toowoomba, Queensland, and grew up as the son of formula racing driver Bob Power in an environment thoroughly shaped by motorsport. He contested his first races in a Datsun 1200 on the tracks at Morgan Park Raceway in Warwick and Carnel Raceway in Stanthorpe, before entering the Queensland Formula Ford Championship in 1999 with an aging, family-owned Swift SC92F. Already in this early phase, his talent showed itself, even though the campaign proceeded only sporadically due to tight budgets.
In 2000, Power won the title in Queensland with the Swift and finished seventh in the national Australian Formula Ford Championship in parallel. After a second-place finish in 2001, he moved to Formula Holden, where he dominated the Australian Drivers’ Championship in 2002 with seven wins and three pole positions. Later that same year, he took the leap into Formula 3, but narrowly missed the title there. In 2003, his path took him to Europe to compete in the British Formula 3 Championship for Diamond Racing and later Fortec Motorsport; in 2004, he completed a full season with Alan Docking Racing. In 2005, he drove for Carlin Motorsport in the World Series by Renault and celebrated two wins before moving mid-season toward Champ Car in North America, where he was named Rookie of the Year in 2006.
In the IndyCar Series, Power developed into one of the most successful drivers in the series’ history. With Team Penske, he won his first championship in 2014 and added another title in 2022, which he secured despite only one season win through impressive consistency and nine podium finishes. Among his career highlights is his victory at the 102nd Indianapolis 500 in 2018, making him the first Australian ever to win the legendary race. With 45 wins and 71 pole positions—a series record—as well as 110 podium finishes, he ranks among the great names of American open-wheel racing.
For the 2026 season, Will Power will race for Andretti Global, having significantly shaped the second half of his career with Team Penske. As a full-time driver for the team, the Australian aims to continue battling for wins and poles well into his forties and further expand his record tally in IndyCar statistics.
