Rinus van Kalmthout, professionally known as Rinus VeeKay, was born on September 11, 2000 in the Netherlands. His motorsport career began as early as 2009 in karting, where at age eight he won races in the 4-Stroke Cadet Championship with a DR chassis and secured the winter series title in the 2009/2010 season. In the following years, he collected numerous national titles, including the 2011 Dutch and Benelux Championships in the Briggs & Stratton World Formula class, as well as titles in the Rotax Max Minimax and Junior classes in 2012 and 2013. In the Rotax Max Euro Challenge Senior, he also finished second behind Australian Pierce Lehane.
His move to formula racing came through the US developmental system: With Pabst Racing, VeeKay competed in USF2000 and became runner-up as a rookie in 2017 behind Oliver Askew. This was followed by a switch to Juncos Racing, with which he won the Pro Mazda Championship, now known as USF Pro 2000, in 2018 with seven wins and eleven podium finishes. In parallel, he secured the title in the F3 Asian Winter Series in 2019 with Hitech Grand Prix. In the Indy Lights season 2019, once again with Juncos Racing, he narrowly missed the title as overall runner-up behind Askew, before achieving his breakthrough into the IndyCar Series with Ed Carpenter Racing in November of that year.
At Ed Carpenter Racing, for which VeeKay raced from 2020 to 2024, he quickly established himself as one of the series’ most impressive young drivers. Already in his debut season in 2020, he achieved his first top-five result at the Indy ēGP and his first podium at the Harvest GP, earning him the Rookie of the Year award in the NTT IndyCar Series. The highlight of his IndyCar career to date came in 2021 with his first race win at the GMR Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, where he defeated Romain Grosjean at the Indy GP by five seconds. After his time at Ed Carpenter Racing, VeeKay joined Dale Coyne Racing in 2025.
For the 2026 season, Rinus VeeKay races as a full-time driver for Juncos Hollinger Racing, the same team with which he once achieved his greatest successes in the junior series Pro Mazda and Indy Lights and laid the foundation for his IndyCar career. The return to Ricardo Juncos’ family thus brings his career full circle. After stints at Ed Carpenter Racing and Dale Coyne Racing, the Dutch driver is now banking on a familiar environment to build on past successes like his 2021 Indy GP win and to establish himself permanently at the top of the IndyCar Series.
