Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington D.C. 2026

Washington, D.C. had long been absent from open-wheel racing, but with the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the IndyCar Series returns to the nation’s capital in 2026 and writes a new chapter. The race marks not only the return of open-wheel racing to the Potomac, but also the very first automotive event ever held on the National Mall. The race is scheduled for August 22 and 23, 2026, nestled within the nationwide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

A predecessor existed previously: in 2002, the Grand Prix of Washington D.C. took place on a 1.66-mile street circuit around the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. Following complaints from residents about noise, the track was not returned to the schedule, leaving just a single running. More than two decades later, the IndyCar Series is reviving the idea of racing in the capital on a much larger scale.

The new temporary street circuit spans 2.74 miles through historic streets around the government district and features a total of seven turns. The track fits into the family of modern IndyCar street courses, combining tight corners with longer straights along symbolically significant sightlines and presents drivers and teams with the typical challenges of racing on public streets, from uneven pavement to varying grip conditions throughout the layout.

As the 15th race of the 2026 season, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix fits into a packed IndyCar calendar while also benefiting from the special historical context of the anniversary year. Promoters and the series emphasize the symbolic significance of the event as

a defining moment of the semiquincentennial celebrations, meant to connect ambition and innovation with the city’s history.

The track naturally has no previous winners’ history, as this is the inaugural running. That is precisely where the special appeal lies: who will etch their name in the annals of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix as the first champion in 2026 remains completely open, and the new circuit through the heart of Washington should provide thrilling racing from the start.
