The history of today’s Andretti Global reaches back to 1993, when Gerald Forsythe and Barry Green founded the team as Forsythe/Green Racing. Just a year later the outfit made its debut in the CART Indy Car World Series. In 1995, Barry Green and his brother Kim took sole control and renamed the team Team Green; under that name it won the CART championship title that very same year. In 2002, former CART champion Michael Andretti bought into the team, after which it was renamed Andretti Green Racing and moved to the Indy Racing League in 2003, the forerunner series to today’s NTT IndyCar Series.
A special chapter in the team’s history is the change in ownership structure in recent years. Michael Andretti secured full control in 2009 and renamed the team Andretti Autosport. In September 2023, driven by ambitions of a Formula 1 entry, came the restructuring into Andretti Global, with Dan Towriss coming aboard as a new co-owner. In 2024 Andretti sold his stake to Mark Walter’s TWG Global Holding, majority owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Towriss remained on board as co-owner and CEO. Since 2026 the parent company TWG Motorsports has also operated the Cadillac Formula 1 team together with General Motors, a step that finally turns the former Indianapolis workshop into a global motorsport conglomerate.
The team’s most successful period began immediately after the move to the IndyCar Series. Racing under the name Andretti Green Racing, Tony Kanaan won the championship as early as 2004, and Dan Wheldon repeated that success the following year, crowning the season with a win at the Indianapolis 500 as well. At the 2005 Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the team even locked out the entire top four with Wheldon, Kanaan, Dario Franchitti, and Bryan Herta, a moment still unique to this day. In total, the team’s record shows six Indianapolis 500 wins (1995, 2005, 2007, 2014, 2016, 2017) and four IndyCar championship titles (2004, 2005, 2007, 2012), complemented by seven Indy NXT championships and the 2022/23 Formula E drivers’ title.
In the current era, Ron Ruzewski takes over the role of team principal for IndyCar and Indy NXT at Andretti Global starting in January 2026. On track, the team is moving forward with a leaner but still hard-hitting lineup of Kyle Kirkwood, Marcus Ericsson, and Will Power. Power’s signing in particular caused a stir, as the two-time champion and Indy 500 winner ended his 17-year stint at Team Penske with the move, replacing Colton Herta in the cockpit. For the first time since the team’s 2003 debut, it entered the Indy 500 test with only three cars instead of four, a deliberately chosen, more focused approach.
With this newly formed driver pairing and a streamlined structure, Andretti Global looks toward the 2026 season with palpable optimism. The combination of Power’s experience, Ericsson’s consistency, and young Kirkwood’s speed is meant to bring the traditional team new laurels in the IndyCar Series. While parent company TWG Motorsports simultaneously pursues its Formula 1 adventure with Cadillac, the IndyCar team, by its own claim, remains the foundation on which the entire Andretti legend was originally built.
