Between weather delays and intense heat, Álex Palou claimed another season victory at the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix, while Team Penske brought three cars home in the top four.
The 2026 Music City Grand Prix refused to be rushed. Bad weather first pushed the race to Monday, then the field battled oppressive heat at Nashville Superspeedway. When 300 laps were in the books, Álex Palou stood as the clear winner, with Josef Newgarden and David Malukas right on his heels. For the championship standings, it was a weekend with a message: Palou extended his lead further, Malukas as the current challenger played the hunted role and struck back at least partially with third place.
Kirkwood From Pole, Palou Prevails in the End
Kyle Kirkwood started from pole position with Newgarden and McLaughlin right behind him, while Palou lined up fourth. On Nashville Superspeedway, where pack racing and tight restarts define the action, it was clear: the starting grid would tell little about the outcome after 399 miles.
Over the race distance, Palou worked his way forward methodically. In the end, he claimed a dominant victory with an 0.8731-second margin over Newgarden, who muscled his way up to second. Kirkwood, the polesitter, tumbled back to mid-field and finished only tenth, a stark reminder of how dramatically the balance of power shifted across the full distance.
Rasmussen Crashes in Opening Lap, Hauger Creates Chaos Later
Christian Rasmussen's day was done before it really started. The ECR driver, who had arrived as the winner from Milwaukee at the previous Music City race, crashed right at the start and wound up P22 with 98 laps down.
The next major caution came much later in the race: Rookie Dennis Hauger touched the wall after several drivers, including Rosenqvist on lap 177, had just completed their final fuel and tire stops. The yellow flag four laps after that stop shuffled the field once more, working perfectly for some strategies while leaving others unable to recover.
Overall, six drivers had no happy ending. Besides Rasmussen, Graham Rahal, Will Power, Alexander Rossi, Marcus Armstrong, and Caio Collet all finished with significant laps down or as DNFs. For Meyer Shank Racing with Armstrong on P24 and A.J. Foyt with Collet on P25, it was a bitter weekend with nothing to show for it.
Penske Triple Threat, Palou Stretches Championship Lead
Team Penske showed unified strength in Nashville: Newgarden in P2, Malukas in P3, and McLaughlin in P4. Three cars in the top four is a statement to the competition, especially on a track that rewards race pace over distance rather than just a quick qualifying lap.
For the championship, the result means one thing above all: Palou pulls away as the points leader while Malukas, the current challenger, scored with third place but couldn't really chip away at the deficit. Looking ahead to upcoming road courses and street circuits, it remains to be seen whether Penske can replicate this form on more technically demanding tracks, or whether Nashville was primarily evidence of the team's oval-racing strength.
