Podium Race
The New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon was not founded as a classic oval temple, but rather as a modest road course. In 1960, the facility was established as Bryar Motorsport Park for auto and motorcycle racing and served for decades as a pure roadcourse. It wasn’t until 1990 that the original track gave way to a 1.058-mile oval, equivalent to approximately 1.703 kilometers, which brought NASCAR racing to New England for the first time and ushered in a new era for motorsports in the region.
The conversion paid off quickly. On July 11, 1993, the NASCAR Cup Series made its debut in Loudon, with Rusty Wallace winning the very first race on the new layout. From 1997 to 2017, the track appeared twice yearly on the Cup calendar, a testament to its growing significance in the eastern United States. Since 2018, the schedule has been reduced to one race per season, making the summer date an even more coveted fixture for drivers and fans alike.
The compact oval with its four tight, flat corners demands the utmost precision in setup from teams. Unlike highbanked tracks, there is little banking here to assist drivers, making tire wear the central variable of every race weekend. Teams that maintain consistent grip throughout the full distance gain a decisive advantage. The tight radii also create a compressed field and exciting position battles, as passing maneuvers require finesse and the right moment on the short straightaway.
In the track’s recent history, Ryan Blaney has established himself as the current most successful winner. He won the race in 2025, adding his name to a long list of notable victors who have triumphed in Loudon since the 1990 reconfiguration. The Magic Mile, as the track is also known for its deceptively short distance and tactical nuances, remains a true test of consistency and clever tire management.
For the 2026 running of the Dollar Tree 301, this tradition once again meets the current generation of the Cup Series. The layout may seem unchanged in its compact character, but the challenge of maintaining grip and balance over 301 miles remains as demanding as it was in the early 1990s when oval racing first came to New England.
