Charlotte Motor Speedway was conceived in 1959 by Bruton Smith and driver Curtis Turner as a dream of a 1.5-mile superspeedway on the edge of the Queen City. On June 19, 1960, the facility officially opened, and right from the start, the World 600, the predecessor of today’s Coca-Cola 600, marked a milestone in NASCAR history. Joe Lee Johnson won that first race over 400 laps with an average speed of 107.735 mph, thus writing the first name in the victory list of this track.

The construction of the oval was not without turbulence. Despite three major events in the first year of operation, high construction costs weighed heavily on the young company. The financial difficulties ultimately led to the Board of Directors stripping Curtis Turner of control over his own project, an early chapter that shows how closely sporting ambition and economic reality were intertwined in the early years of motorsports.

In terms of layout, Charlotte Motor Speedway presents itself as a classic quad-oval with a length of 2.414 kilometers and four turns, which demands constantly changing performance levels from drivers through its varying radii in the corners. In addition to the traditional oval configuration, there has been a so-called Roval variant with a chicane on the back stretch for several years, which was modified in 2019; further adjustments to the chicanes were announced for 2024. For the Coca-Cola 600 itself, however, the classic oval layout remains the standard, which has defined the track since its founding.

The victory list of the Coca-Cola 600 reads like a who’s who of NASCAR history, and most recently Ross Chastain added his name in 2025. As one of the longest and physically most demanding races on the Cup calendar, the Coca-Cola 600 is traditionally regarded as a tough test for man and machine, contested as part of Memorial Day weekend. With the 2026 edition, Charlotte Motor Speedway continues this long tradition and writes another chapter of a story that has fascinated drivers and fans alike for six decades.
