Detroit was founded in 1701 by French merchant Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac and even served as the capital of the newly formed state of Michigan from 1837 for a decade, before the seat of government moved to Lansing. However, the city on the Detroit River owes its worldwide reputation to the automobile industry, which had its origins in 1898 with Henry Ford’s first self-built automobile. This very industrial legacy serves as the backdrop for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, which leads the IndyCar Series through the streets of the Motor City and uniquely connects motorsport with urban history.
As title sponsor, Chevrolet has shaped the event for years, while the NTT IndyCar Series in 2026 runs its 115th official championship and already its 31st season under its own sanctioning. While the Indianapolis 500 traditionally holds status as the crown jewel of the calendar, the Detroit Grand Prix has established itself as a fixed fixture, where the series showcases the urban charm and industrial symbolism of the city. For the weekend of May 29-31, 2026, three racing series are scheduled in downtown Detroit, which adds significant weight to the event on the calendar.
The track itself measures 2.647 kilometers and winds through nine turns in the dense downtown landscape, where concrete barriers and curbing leave little room for error. The combination of fast sections along broader boulevards and tight, technical passages between buildings makes the circuit a true test for drivers and engineers, who must fine-tune setup and tire management over the full race distance.
In this demanding environment, Kyle Kirkwood set the track record in 2023 with a time of 1:01.941, which still stands today, and most recently underscored his strength on the Detroit downtown circuit with a victory in 2025. With this, he ranks among the defining figures in recent racing history at this venue and will be among the favorites in 2026 when the IndyCar Series once again races through the streets of the Motor City and fans can experience the full speed of the action trackside.
