HMD Motorsports w/ AJ Foyt Racing brings together two programs with very different histories. HMD Motorsports was founded in 2017 and is owned by Henry Malukas; the team first made a name for itself as a formidable development program, including in the Indy Lights Series and Indy NXT by Firestone, IndyCar’s official development series. AJ Foyt Racing, on the other hand, is one of the most storied names in American motorsport, founded back in 1965 by a genuine legend of the sport.

A chapter of its own in this story is the traditional team’s name itself: A. J. Foyt Enterprises operates under the name A. J. Foyt Racing and remains owned to this day by A. J. Foyt himself, four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, winner of the 1972 Daytona 500 and the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans. Few other names are as emblematic of American open-wheel racing, and it is exactly this connection between tradition and driver development that makes the partnership with HMD Motorsports so special.

The program’s greatest run of success is rooted in the present, as both organizations combine their strengths. AJ Foyt Racing has won races and championships in the IndyCar Series since its founding in 1965 and remains one of the series’ most iconic teams. HMD Motorsports, meanwhile, is regarded as a championship-winning development program that picked up immediately where it left off after returning alongside AJ Foyt Racing to Indy NXT by Firestone in 2026, serving as the Foyt program’s technical partner.

In the current era, the traditional team is led by team president Larry Foyt, who is steering AJ Foyt Racing’s two-car effort back into Indy NXT by Firestone. In May, HMD Motorsports further expands its presence through the partnership with AJ Foyt Racing, entering Katherine Legge in the No. 11 e.l.f. Chevrolet for the Indianapolis 500. Legge thus drives for one of the most storied teams in American motorsport history, which continues to field two full entries in the NTT IndyCar Series while relying on experienced drivers.

For the 2026 season, the focus turns to deepening this partnership between driver development and a traditional team even further.
