Circuit Zandvoort 2026

The history of Circuit Zandvoort dates back to the pre-war era. As early as June 3, 1939, the first car race took place on the Dutch coast, a street race that is considered the birth of motorsport in the Netherlands. However, World War II initially prevented the construction of a permanent racing circuit. Only after the war ended did people use the connecting roads laid by German occupiers and the rubble from destroyed hotels as a foundation to form a permanent course from the dune terrain.

In 1948, the track was finally asphalted, and on August 7 of that year, the newly created facility was officially opened with the Prix van Zandvoort race. The course subsequently became known as Circuit Park Zandvoort and developed into a mainstay of the international racing calendar in the following decades. Political and financial entanglements repeatedly shaped the circuit’s history, as evidenced by discussions involving Mayor Van Alphen, before completion was ultimately achieved in 1948.

In more recent times, ownership and contractual arrangements have remained in flux. In late 2022, plans for the circuit’s future were announced, which were to be implemented by the end of 2025. Additionally, since July 2025, the circuit has borne the name Mascot Circuit Zandvoort for at least three years, evidence that sponsorship and naming rights remain a central element of circuit financing.

In terms of layout, Zandvoort is characterized by its location in the dunes, which create a distinctive wave-like form of the asphalt. The combination of high-speed straights and technically demanding corners, some with notable banking, presents drivers with particular challenges at braking points, apex points, and corner exits. These characteristics make Zandvoort one of the most precision-intensive circuits on the European motorsport calendar.

Throughout the long history of Circuit Zandvoort, numerous winners have left their mark in the annals, from the early post-war races to modern Grand Prix events with track records in the range of approximately 1:11 minutes. The circuit thus remains a living testament to Dutch motorsport history and a demanding venue for the 2026 DTM season.
